Izu‑Kogen luggage: ask your hotel first

Local buses here have little room for luggage, and the cliff path has steps. Sort out the suitcase first.

Rows of coin lockers inside Izu-Kogen Station

By Izu Experiences Japan — we run four hands-on workshops in Izu-Kogen (soba, sushi, pottery, glass and candles) and answer visitors' questions on Instagram. Last updated 22 October 2026.

When you book, ask your hotel whether it can hold your suitcase. If it can, drop the case there before you do anything else. Many local buses here have narrow aisles and little or no luggage space, and the Jogasaki cliff path is lava rock with steps, so a suitcase that comes along for the afternoon makes the day harder. If the hotel cannot help, the coin lockers at Izu-Kogen Station are the fallback, not the plan.

Can my hotel hold my bags?

Settle this when you book. Ask two things: can the hotel keep your bags before check-in, and can it keep them after check-out until you leave for the train. Here is what we found for the three hotels we recommend near Izu-Kogen Station, checked in October 2026.

Hinodeya is about 5 minutes on foot from the station, and our guidebook notes it offers free pick-up; arrange that when you book. It is close enough to walk to with your bags before you start the day. We could not find an official website for Hinodeya, so we have no written luggage policy to quote. Ask when you book.

Akazawa Onsen Hotel runs a free shuttle bus from Izu-Kogen Station. The ride takes about 25 minutes, and the bus leaves from the Yamamo Exit (South Exit), about 3 minutes on foot from the ticket gate. The timetable is on the resort's access page, which warns that traffic on the main road can delay it. Our guidebook puts a taxi at about 10 minutes and a little over ¥1,000. We found nothing on the official pages about holding bags before check-in, so ask.

Zagyoso (its own site spells it Zagyosoh) is about 10 minutes from the station by taxi. Its official FAQ says luggage sent ahead is held until the day of your stay, and asks you to write your stay date and the name on the booking on the courier slip. It also picks guests up at Izu-Kogen Station to meet their train: tell them your arrival time in advance and wait in the waiting room to the left of the ticket gate. On the morning you leave, it runs several trips back to the station, and the FAQ says no booking is needed. When we checked in October 2026, the FAQ said nothing about a bag you carry in on the morning you arrive, so ask.

Can I send my suitcase ahead?

Yes, if the hotel accepts it. Yamato Transport's courier service is TA-Q-BIN (宅急便 in Japanese, the word Zagyoso's FAQ uses). You send the case, then travel to Izu with a day bag.

We do not quote prices here; Yamato's pages have the current rates. If you want to send the bag on from Izu when you leave, ask the front desk whether it can arrange TA-Q-BIN.

Are there lockers at the station?

Yes. Izu-Kogen Station has coin lockers, open 5:00 to 22:00. Only a limited number take a large suitcase, so do not count on one being free. When we checked in October 2026 we could not find sizes or prices on Izukyu's official website. A locker also means a trip back to the station before it closes, then on to your hotel. If you will not pass your hotel before dark, it works. Otherwise, use the hotel.

We have not checked the lockers at Ito Station. Ask the station staff if you are arriving there.

What fits on the train?

On the Odoriko from Tokyo, bags go on the rack above your seat or in the luggage space at the end of cars 1 and 9. On the Izukyu line, the railway's FAQ (in Japanese) allows up to two pieces per person, each within 250 cm in total dimensions and 30 kg, and nothing longer than 2 m. Suitcases ride free.

What if we hire a taxi for the day?

Then the bags stay in the trunk all day and the stop at the hotel disappears. The two local companies are Tozu Taxi (+81 557-37-3511), which has a translation tablet in the car, and Izu Tokai Taxi, which answers in Japanese, so ask your hotel to call. Izu Tokai Taxi lists its sightseeing courses on its website (in Japanese).

Questions we get

Will my hotel keep my bags early?

Ask when you book. Zagyoso's official FAQ says it holds luggage sent ahead until the day of your stay. When we checked in October 2026 we found no written policy on bags carried in before check-in at any of the three hotels, so get the answer from the hotel.

Are there coin lockers at Izu-Kogen Station?

Yes, open 5:00 to 22:00. Only a limited number take a large suitcase, so do not plan the day around one. When we checked in October 2026 we could not find sizes or prices on Izukyu's official website.

How do I send a suitcase ahead?

Use Yamato's TA-Q-BIN from a Yamato office or a convenience store with the TA-Q-BIN sign, after checking that the hotel accepts it. Round Trip TA-Q-BIN, Yamato's service for accommodation, asks you to drop the bag off two days before check-in, three in some areas. For an ordinary one-way TA-Q-BIN, ask the counter for the delivery date.

Can I take a suitcase on the local bus?

Local buses here have narrow aisles and little or no luggage space. Drop the bag at your hotel first, or use a taxi or the hotel's own transport.

How much can I bring on Izukyu?

Izukyu's FAQ allows up to two pieces per person, each within 250 cm in total dimensions and 30 kg, and nothing longer than 2 m. Suitcases ride free.

What about lockers at Ito Station?

We did not check Ito Station for this article. Ask the station staff, or plan to leave the bag at your hotel.
